However, during the process of editing for publishing, roughly forty-five thousand words were edited out – including much of the material in the first seven chapters of the Text. The Complete and Annotated Edition restores these lost words. It does this by going back to Helen Schucman’s shorthand Notes and editing afresh, preserving the original words to the highest degree possible.
Unlike the Sparkle Edition published by the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP), this edition contains the entire Text of A Course in Miracles as it was completed in 1972 by Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford. It also includes a FOREWORD written by the Course in Miracles Society and thirty-three Cameo essays that expand upon the Course’s teachings.

The Clarification of Terms
The Course contains a number of controversial ideas. Some people feel it is too complicated or difficult to understand. Others find it too religious or dogmatic. Nevertheless, ACIM has spread to become a global community of individuals and groups. It is important to remember that it is not a religion, but rather a spiritual path. Ultimately, each person will have to decide whether or not it is right for them.
The manual for teachers teaches that after a period of learning and transformation, it is possible to become equipped to teach the course to others. It provides a framework for teaching, although it does not specify exactly how this should be done. It also discusses issues such as reincarnation and the meaning of healing.
Some of the terms used in the course are unfamiliar to readers. The manual for teachers attempts to clarify these terms by defining their meanings and offering examples. This is a helpful tool for new students of the Course. However, the original scribes of the Course did not include this section as part of the dictation.
Some versions of the Course are referred to as the “Original Edition”. The scribes, Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford, divided the Text into chapters, added titles, and removed some material they felt was personal and not for the Course. The result was three volumes — the Text, Workbook for Students, and the Manual for Teachers. The Combined Volume of the Course, published by the Foundation for Inner Peace, combines these three books into a single volume. The first printing of this volume included the PREFACE titled THE USE OF TERMS, which was omitted from the subsequent FIP editions.
The Song of Prayer
Originally published in 1976, A Course in Miracles has become one of the most popular contemporary spiritual classics. Millions of people around the world have found it offers a way to experience a life of inner peace and fulfillment that goes far beyond anything they had imagined possible.
But the course is not for everyone in its current form and has been criticized as too difficult, too long, overly wordy and confusing. Others would see it as a threat to their existing beliefs and values or merely as a new version of long-held religious theologies and doctrines.
The original manuscript of the course contains a three-volume set: the Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers. However, the scribes of the course removed many words from the early chapters of the Text to focus on the more important material that they felt was intended for the Course as a whole.
As a result, there are many different versions of the course available. These include the Complete and Annotated edition, which contains every urtext word that Helen Schucman recorded in her shorthand notes along with extensive footnotes clarifying challenging passages. It also includes two valuable supplements; Psychotherapy and The Song of Prayer.
Another version is the Sparkly Edition which was printed in the early 1980s by the Foundation for Inner Peace and focuses on preserving a sense of simplicity. The Sparkly Edition removes some urtext wording and capitalization and does not contain any of the supplements.
